AISI 304 or AISI 316 – Which Should You Choose? Stainless and Acid-Resistant Steel Compared

AISI 304 and AISI 316 are the most common stainless steel grades. Both are corrosion-resistant, durable and suitable for many construction and industrial applications. The key difference is that AISI 316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to chlorides and acidic environments.

What is AISI 304?

AISI 304 is the standard stainless steel grade. It contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It is suitable for indoor use, dry outdoor environments, food-related applications, handrails, frames, decorative structures and many industrial components. It is widely available and cost-effective.

What is AISI 316?

AISI 316 contains chromium, nickel and approximately 2–3% molybdenum. The molybdenum improves corrosion resistance in salty, acidic and chloride-rich environments. AISI 316 is commonly used in coastal areas, swimming pools, marine applications, chemical environments and demanding outdoor installations.

Corrosion resistance

AISI 304 performs well in normal indoor and outdoor conditions. However, it can develop surface staining or pitting in chloride-rich environments. AISI 316 resists these conditions significantly better, although it is not completely maintenance-free. Regular cleaning is still important in coastal and industrial areas.

Price difference

AISI 316 is usually more expensive than AISI 304 because it contains molybdenum and more alloying elements. The price difference is often justified when the environment is aggressive, because premature corrosion or replacement costs are much higher than the material difference.

Where to use each grade

Use AISI 304 indoors, in dry environments, standard handrails, furniture, frames and general stainless steel structures. Use AISI 316 near the sea, in swimming pools, chemical plants, food processing with chlorides, and any location exposed to salt or acids.

Summary
