Handrail Installation Requirements and Standards – Height, Material and Fixing
A safe handrail requires correct height, reliable fixing and suitable material. The requirements depend on where the handrail is installed, who will use it and what loads it must withstand. This guide explains the most important principles for handrail installation.
Height
A common handrail height is approximately 900 mm in residential and general building use. In public, industrial or high-risk locations, higher guardrails may be required. Always confirm the final height from the applicable building regulations and project drawings.
Standards
Industrial stairs, platforms and access routes are commonly designed according to EN ISO 14122. The standard covers guardrail height, intermediate rails, toe boards, openings and strength requirements. Local building requirements may also apply depending on the project.
Materials
AISI 304 stainless steel is suitable for most indoor and normal outdoor environments. AISI 316 is recommended for coastal areas, swimming pools and other chloride-rich environments. Aluminium can also be used in lightweight applications, but stainless steel is often preferred where durability and appearance are important.
Fixing and bracket spacing
Bracket spacing is usually between 1,200 and 1,500 mm for stainless steel handrails, depending on tube size, wall thickness and load. The fixing base must be strong enough: concrete, steel, timber and masonry require different anchors and installation methods.
Installation steps
Check drawings and dimensions, mark fixing points, drill accurately, clean the holes, install anchors, mount brackets and align the rail before final tightening. After installation, check rigidity, alignment, edge safety and surface cleanliness.
Correctly installed handrails improve safety and last for many years. Kominox supplies stainless steel handrail tubes, profiles and related materials for both indoor and outdoor projects.
